Cardboard Plotter

Handmade manual drawing machine by Niklas Roy made with simple materials - video embedded below:

This plotter is made entirely out of cardboard, welding rod, rubber bands, adhesive tape and super glue. The digital memory is a little book with plenty of different drawing codes, which are written down as coordinates. In this video I’m entering the first code, which makes the plotter draw “hello world”.

Architectural lighting design firm LDC (Lighting Design Collective S.L.) has been awarded a prize to realize a permanent urban light art piece in Helsinki, Finland - an official project for Helsinki World Design Capital 2012.

The art piece will convert a disused oil silo into a wondrous light display and a civic space. Public will gain access to the vast interior of the 35m diameter 16 meter tall steel silo which will be dark red inside. Sunlight will fill the space with dappled shadows creating a spectacular daytime space.

At night 1280 white LED´s flicker and sway on the surface of the silo controlled by a bespoke software mimicking swarms of birds in flight – a reference to silo´s seaside location. The prevailing winds, well known to those living in Helsinki, are used to trigger different light patterns in real time.

Greenscape tactiles by Jacob Raeder

Made from humble red-brick clay, the vessels are individually thrown on the wheel, their harsh, geometrical shape informed by the architecture of grain silos that sprout in the American Plains and MidWest.

Once fired, the outline becomes hidden as the mucilaginous seeds are applied to the exterior and begin to take root and grow. A hint of the vessel does remain, the idea or ideal of functionality present in the work through the understanding of an interior volume glimpsed from the opening in the top. But these vessels do not hold water, and the seeds turn into plants, absorbing the water through the porous clay, and the once-red silos transition into green hillocks. The life cycle is short, the plants fragile, the allure of tactility undeniable.
